Shoes News for early Fall 2009

Toe gloves?

Vibram Technologies is making these new, ahem, shoes that have five toes in them, just like gloves for your feet.  Supposedly, they are just like walking barefoot. They look like water shoes with toes, and there is not much support on the bottom, and that is the point.  Our bodies were designed to go barefoot and this is the closest you can get to that feeling.

Nike Lebron Shoes

Now Lebron is even more like Mike! Besides being the hottest young phenom in the NBA, his shoes, made by Nike, are reaching the sort of feeding frenzy that Air Jordan had in the eighties, when every young boy had to have them, and there were fights and even kids getting badly hurt over them.  Apparently, there have also been knockoffs spotted of these shoes as well, because the website goes into detail about how to spot fake Lebron’s.

Air Jordan’s still all the rage

The first Air Jordan’s were released in 1984, 25 years later the new releases are still wildly anticipated by rabid sneaker fans around the world.  Check out this site, Bay Area Kicks that has all of the recent, current, and upcoming release dates so that Jordan fans can be first in line to pick up the newest version of the ultra-cool shoes they’ve been wearing since before they could drive a car.

Hurting for Fashion

Recent research shows that four out of ten women wear the wrong-sized shoes in an attempt to keep up with fashion trends. It seems that looking good is more important than whether there is a shoe in their size or not. Chiropodists and Podiatrists are urging women to favor comfort over fashion, because ill-fitting shoes can cause all manner of problems with your feet.  The study also found that 80% of women already have problems like bunions, cracked heels, corns and ingrown toenails but over 40% have never seen a doctor for any of these problems.  Stop it people!  Wear shoes that fit, and see a doctor when you need to!

Toms Shoe Donation

This Company was founded with this idea in mind- for every pair of shoes they sold; they would also give a pair of new shoes to a child that needed them.  Founder Blake Mycoskie traveled in 2006 to Argentina and found most children had no shoes to protect their feet from cuts and sores and diseases from contaminated soils. Children in developing countries mostly go barefoot, and they are always at risk.  Having shoes enables them to walk greater distances more safely and also to be able to go to school.  Kids without shoes usually just don’t get an education, which is their opportunity to realize their full potential.

Back to school shoe tips

The most important thing to do before buying the kid’s new shoes is getting their feet measured. They grow so quickly; do not depend on last year’s size to fit. If one foot is larger, get the bigger size so that you don’t squeeze the other foot into the shoe.  Inspect the heels of kid’s shoes for uneven wear, and report it to your doctor as it may be a sign of foot problems.  Don’t buy uncomfortable shoes; there is no need to “break in” new shoes that fit correctly and are made well.
